A Westbourne born and bred, Mel Baker, tells us that in 1995, his daughter worked as Secretary to the Editor of The Chichester Observer (Keith Newbery). The latter had the idea of broadening the spread of the newspaper and The Ems Valley Gazette was born.

Articles of local interest were required, and Mel’s daughter suggested that her father could write some based on his post WWII memories. Mel tells us that he did so without fee !

We reproduce all that we have, from Tom Edwards’ collection, and hope that you enjoy their gentle style as we have.

All reproduced by the kind permission of Mel and The Chichester Observer.

At the end, a recent addition.

Mel wrote a tribute to Sidney Morgan on his death, which appears, with others, on Keith Hart’s splendid site (see Links).

As it also gives a picture of the Cricket Club past, we reproduce it here, by kind permission of Keith and Mel.

In his article about cricket and football Mel mentions the private school which occupied The Chantry at the end of WWII.  Historic England have an 1949 image (EAW023264) on their website and kindly allow us to embed it into our website, which we do below with thanks.  Foxbury Lane runs horizontally.

It appears that an ornamental garden existed, and if one zooms in on the image, there seems to be a cricket match in progress.  The school is named as Lindfield.  Mel calls in Lavington.  1945 Planning Permission in the Records Office calls it Avington !  The allotments, Cemetery and Army Camp can all be identified.
